This year, I graduated from the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) with a Graduate Diploma in Radio and Podcasting — a course that has not only helped me grow creatively and professionally, but also completely changed the way I approach media, storytelling and audiences.
When I first applied, I was eager to develop my skills further after years of volunteering and casual work in community and commercial radio. I knew I had the passion, but I wanted structure, industry insight and real-world experience. AFTRS delivered all of that and more.
Throughout the course, I learnt how to create compelling audio content — from live radio shows to narrative podcasts. We explored audience strategy, sound design, media law, pitching, creative writing, interviewing and presenting. But most importantly, we learnt how to tell stories that matter. I was lucky enough to work with some incredibly talented people and be mentored by respected industry professionals who brought a wealth of experience into the room every week.
Where am I now? I’m currently working in both the radio and tech industries — blending creative content with operational support and traffic management. My time at AFTRS gave me the tools to think strategically, act professionally, and remain creatively driven — even under pressure.
It’s a privilege to be part of an industry that values connection, creativity and impact. I’ll always be grateful for the opportunities this course gave me, and for the amazing community I met along the way.
If you’re thinking about applying for AFTRS or pursuing a similar path — go for it. The only thing standing between you and the next step in your career is backing yourself.
Thanks again to everyone who’s been part of the journey. Here’s to what’s next.
